Navigating the Energy Future with Strategy and Innovation

As the electric industry continues to evolve, so does the way we manage energy procurement. With the rise of renewable energy and market variability, utilities like Cloverland must shift from passive to active strategies – similar to managing a 401(k).

Think of it this way: a traditional 401(k) plan uses passive investment management – you make monthly contributions and a company manages your investments in a preset portfolio. This is similar to how many utilities operate under long-term purchased power agreements. But what if you had the option to manage your investments more actively, buying specific stocks when the timing is right? That’s the approach Cloverland is taking with energy procurement – strategic, informed and responsive to changing market conditions.

Our long-term purchased power agreement with Wisconsin Energy Corporation (WEC) ends in spring 2029. This transition, paired with favorable market conditions, presents a unique opportunity for Cloverland to shape its future power supply and secure competitive rates for our members.

To support this effort, we’ve brought on a dedicated energy services team with decades of industry expertise. This team now manages daily operations in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market, regulatory filings and long-term forecasting – tasks previously handled by outside vendors. Their insights position us to respond nimbly to energy trends and ensure stable, affordable rates.

The market is demanding that utilities change to be more proactive in managing their energy needs. While the cooperative industry has operated with legacy mindset for decades, we are in an era of change. Cloverland is on the forefront of transformation with innovation energy services and solutions.

One staff member recently attended the MI Healthy Climate Conference and shared key takeaways – many of which confirmed that Cloverland is ahead of the curve. While the event emphasized the need for utilities to increase transparency, invest in renewable generation, and think creatively about future energy needs, Cloverland is already making progress in these areas. Our solar development planning, focus on member engagement and proactive energy procurement strategies all reflect the forward-thinking mindset discussed at the conference.

We’re proud to lead the way with forward-thinking strategies that support our mission and benefit our membership. As we move toward 2029 and beyond, we remain committed to keeping energy affordable and reliable for today and the generations ahead.
