Addressing Member Concerns Regarding the Impacts of Tariffs

Updated March 11, 2025

“We understand concerns about the impact of new tariffs on energy imports,” states Cloverland Electric Cooperative’s President and CEO, Mike Heise. “Rest assured, 100% of Cloverland’s fuel sources are U.S.-based, so these tariffs will not affect our operations. By sourcing energy domestically, we ensure reliability, affordability and support for our local economy.”

Cloverland Electric Cooperative is not affected by the tariffs since we generate and purchase energy within the US. To clarify, here are a couple of points to summarize our fuel sources and interactions with Canada:

  • Cloverland Electric’s energy source includes approximately 50% hydroelectricity and 50% purchased power through Wisconsin Energy Corporation (WEC). The hydroelectricity is generated in the US by Cloverland’s plant (approximately 30%) and the US Corps of Engineers at the Soo Locks (approximately 20%). For reference, Cloverland’s fuel mix report reflects all of these sources.
  • We have been in discussions with several entities in Canada regarding a future transmission line connection that would strengthen reliability for our Eastern Upper Peninsula service area. At this time, it is undetermined how tariffs will affect this potential partnership. [for reference – April 29, 2024 Manager’s Message ; October 28, 2024 Manager’s Message ].
