DAFTER, Mich. (October 1, 2020) – As part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, Cloverland Electric Cooperative warns members to stay alert of rising scam calls across the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Cybersecurity is essential to personal and financial safety on every device, whether in the office or at home.
The cooperative’s member services representatives have reported scam calls offering financial compensation and gift cards to members if they perform an action, (i.e. press 1 for more information.) Scam calls have also threatened to shut off service if a call to action was not completed. Please be aware that Cloverland Electric will never ask for personal details or demand payment by phone. Do not provide scam callers with your personal or financial information.
“Members should always be cautious of any calls claiming to be from Cloverland Electric asking for personal or financial information,” said Cloverland Electric’s IT Director Chuck Zane. “Unless we are returning a call from you, or following up on a request, all of our outbound calls will be automated notifications.
Zane also reminds members that no matter the circumstances, reasons given, or even if threats of disconnect are made, members should end the call by hanging up, and call Cloverland’s member services team at 800-562-4953 with questions or concerns. If personal or financial information was provided to a spam caller, immediately contact your financial institution.
