Dafter, Mich. (February 10, 2025) –Cloverland Electric Cooperative prioritizes the safety of our community and the security of our hydroelectric plant, which is considered critical infrastructure and provides approximately 30% of the power to the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
Cloverland is currently updating dam safety and physical security studies to determine the most reasonable path forward. As critical energy infrastructure, these studies must account for dam safety using Federal and state guidelines, as well as physical security. All areas of the hydro complex are being evaluated. Later this year, a full review and recommendation from the updated study will be presented by Cloverland officers and management staff to the Board for their review and discussion.

Cloverland Electric Cooperative delivers safe, reliable, and affordable energy to 43,000 meters across five rural counties in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. With 4,000 miles of line, Cloverland locally operates Sault Ste. Marie’s historic hydroelectric plant, which helps generate about 30% of the co-op’s power. Combined with hydro power from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Soo Locks, renewable energy makes up 40-50% of Cloverland’s fuel mix.
